How to Use This Grade Calculator

This calculator averages your assignment grades so you always know exactly where you stand in any class. It works for both high school and college students, and handles scores entered as percentages or raw points.

Simple Average = Sum of all scores ÷ Number of assignments

Points Average = Total points earned ÷ Total points possible × 100

Example (percentage):
Quiz 1: 88%, Quiz 2: 92%, Quiz 3: 79%
Average = (88 + 92 + 79) ÷ 3 = 86.3% → B
  1. Choose your input mode. Use "Percentage Scores" if your teacher gives you grades like 88% or 42/50. Use "Points Earned" if you want to enter the raw numbers — like 42 points earned out of 50 possible.
  2. Add your assignments. Name each one (optional) and enter the score. Hit "+ Add Assignment" for as many as you need.
  3. Set a target (optional). Enter your target grade and how many assignments are left in the semester. The calculator will tell you what average you need on the remaining work to hit your goal.
  4. Calculate. Your average, letter grade, GPA equivalent, highest score, and lowest score all appear — along with a breakdown bar for each assignment.

Common Assignment Grade Examples

These examples show how common assignment scores translate into percentages and letter grades on the grading scale used by this calculator.

42/50 = 84% → B
45/50 = 90% → A−
40/50 = 80% → B−
32/35 = 91.4% → A−

What is 42 out of 50 as a grade? A score of 42 out of 50 is 84%, which is a B on the standard plus/minus scale used by this calculator. If you want to convert any points score directly into a percentage, use our Grade Percentage Calculator.

How much does a 100-point assignment affect my grade? That depends on how your class calculates grades. If every assignment is equally weighted, a 100-point assignment is one assignment in the average. If your class uses total points or category weights, the effect can be different.

Frequently Asked Questions

On the standard grading scale: 90–100% = A, 80–89% = B, 70–79% = C, 60–69% = D, below 60% = F. So a 75% is a C and an 82% is a B. With plus/minus grades: 75% is a C, and 82% is a B−. Always check your teacher or professor's specific scale — some use 93%+ for an A while others use 90%+.
42 out of 50 is 84%. On the standard plus/minus grading scale used by this calculator, 84% is a B. You can enter 42 as the points earned and 50 as the points possible in Points Earned mode.
If your score is given as a percentage, enter it in Percentage Scores mode. If you have points earned out of points possible, such as 42/50, switch to Points Earned mode and enter both numbers. The calculator converts the score to a percentage and includes it in your assignment average.
It depends on your grading system. This calculator treats each assignment equally when calculating the simple average. If your class uses total points, category weights, or another grading method, use the appropriate grading system rather than assuming every assignment has the same weight.
Percentage Scores lets you enter grades such as 84%, 91%, or 76% directly. Points Earned lets you enter raw scores such as 42/50 or 18/20. In this calculator, each completed assignment is converted to a percentage and then included equally in the simple average.
This calculator uses a simple average — it treats every assignment equally. If your class uses a weighted grading system (where homework counts 20%, midterm 30%, final 40%, etc.), use our Weighted Grade Calculator instead, which handles those category weights properly.
Switch to "Points Earned" mode and enter each assignment's earned points and possible points separately. For example: Quiz (18/20), Homework (47/50), Test (83/100). The calculator converts each score to a percentage and gives each assignment equal weight in the simple average. If your class uses total points or category weights instead, use a calculator designed for that grading system.
Enter your current assignments, then fill in the Target Grade field (90 for an A) and the number of assignments remaining. The calculator will tell you exactly what average you need on the remaining work to reach your goal. If the required score is above 100%, the target is no longer achievable through grades alone — consider asking about extra credit.
Yes — if your teacher drops the lowest grade, simply delete that assignment row using the × button before calculating. Your average will then be computed without that score, matching what your teacher will do at the end of the term.
